LONDON’S STATUES OF WOMEN

by Juliet Rix

Safe Haven Books, 2025

Never mind all the Great Men – what about the great women immortalised on London’s streets? As this superbly wide-ranging book reveals, they are an extraordinary and varied band with exceptional tales to tell.

It may have taken the women a little (Ok, a lot) longer to gain recognition, but recent years have seen new figures of Virginia Woolf, Mary Wollstonecraft, Ada Lovelace, even Wonder Woman – and of course Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square.

Here are ground-breaking statues of the black community, famous names from Florence Nightingale to Twiggy, interviews with artists like Maggi Hambling and Gillian Wearing, and a look at why Britannia, Justice, even nations, arts and science are personified as women.

London’s Statues of Women offers nothing less than a new vision of the capital.

MALTA & GOZO

by Juliet Rix

Bradt Guides, 5th edition 2025

The fifth edition of Malta & Gozo is the most detailed guide available for exploring this captivating Mediterranean island nation. Authored by a long-time expert, the guide reveals cultural treasures beyond Malta’s famous ‘sun & sea’.

With the highest density of historic sites of any nation, Malta’s rich heritage includes influences from Neolithic, Roman, medieval, Arab, Punic, French, and British civilisations. You can visit UNESCO-listed temples older than Egypt’s pyramids, explore unusual Roman catacombs, or admire medieval citadels and the Baroque legacy of the Knights of St. John. Additionally, you can discover WWII shelters used by General Eisenhower or the striking new parliament building in Valletta, designed by Renzo Piano. Experience Caravaggio’s largest painting, relax on beautiful beaches with 300 days of sunshine or indulge in one of Malta’s seven Michelin-starred restaurants.

Whether you are a culture lover, history buff, foodie, or diver, this guide has something for everyone.

IS THERE SEX AFTER CHILDBIRTH? - A Couple’s Guide to Survival through Pregnancy, Birth and Parenthood

by Juliet Rix

Thorsons, Harper Collins, 1995

Please note: This book is now out of print and out of date (medically and socially). The core findings about parenthood, expectation and understanding, remain highly relevant but 25 years on it is in need of an update.

Bringing together medical and social research with a host of original interviews, this book presents previously hard-to-find information about the physical and emotional changes brought on by pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

This is an intense time in any couple's emotional and sexual relationship. Research shows that more than half of couples take longer than a year to get their sex lives back on track after the arrival of their first child, and counsellors and sex therapists recognise this as a time when long-term problems can take root.

Yet little or nothing is said about this in most antenatal classes, and 'baby books’ brush over it. Sex and parenthood is one of the last taboos.
